Day 265

The Word for Today

Worry

Tomorrow Can Wait

Matthew 6:34 | WEB
“Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day's own evil is sufficient.”

World English Bible (WEB)

Today's Reflection

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses disciples tempted to let daily needs rule their hearts. He has just pointed to birds and lilies, reminded them that their heavenly Father knows what they need, and called them to seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness first. Matthew 6:34 does not forbid wise planning or pretend that trouble is unreal. It forbids borrowing tomorrow’s burdens before tomorrow arrives. Because the Father is faithful and Christ has secured our welcome into his care, we can receive grace for the day actually before us. Today’s trouble is enough; tomorrow remains in God’s hands, not ours.

Our generation can carry an entire week before breakfast. Work messages follow us home, financial pressures trigger endless calculations, and digital noise places other people’s careers, homes, bodies, and relationships beside our own. Comparison then turns possibilities into predictions: What if I fall behind, lose security, disappoint someone, or never catch up? Jesus does not shame anxious people; he gently redirects attention from imagined futures to the Father who is present now. Anxiety may also need support from a qualified mental health professional, and seeking that help is not a failure of faith. Christ meets us through truth, prayer, wise people, and appropriate care.

Today, name the specific tomorrow you are carrying. Write down what belongs to responsible action today—making the call, completing one task, reviewing the budget, or having an honest conversation—and leave what cannot yet be acted upon with God. Silence nonessential notifications for a set period, and resist checking someone else’s life for clues about your own worth. Pray Matthew 6:34 slowly whenever your mind races ahead, then return to the next faithful step. Before sleep, thank the Father for three evidences of his care today. You do not need tomorrow’s strength tonight; in Christ, you are invited to trust the One already there.

Today's Confession

“I declare that tomorrow belongs to my faithful Father, so I will not carry its burdens today. In Christ, I am welcomed, cared for, and given grace for each present need. I choose faithful action over anxious speculation and prayer over fearful rehearsing. God will be with me tomorrow just as surely as he is with me today.”

Today's Prayer

  1. 1Father, quiet my anxious thoughts. Help me trust your care today.
  2. 2Lord Jesus, show me the next faithful step. Keep me from borrowing tomorrow’s trouble.
  3. 3Holy Spirit, guard my heart from comparison and digital noise. Fix my attention on what is true.
  4. 4Father, give me wisdom about work, money, and relationships. Help me act responsibly and rest in you.

Pause & Reflect

What burden from tomorrow am I carrying today, and what would it look like to entrust it to God?
