Courage

Joshua 1 records a decisive transition: Moses has died, and Joshua must lead Israel across the Jordan into the land God promised. The command to be strong and courageous is repeated because the task is weighty and opposition is real. Yet God does not tell Joshua to manufacture confidence; He anchors courage in His own faithful presence and in obedience to His word. “Don’t be afraid” is therefore not a denial of danger, but a call to trust the covenant-keeping God. In the wider biblical story, that same faithful God comes near to us in Jesus Christ, whose finished work secures our peace with God.

Our generation often treats courage as a mood we must wait to feel. But work pressures, anxious thoughts, comparison, strained relationships, rising costs, and relentless digital noise rarely create ideal emotional conditions. Joshua 1:9 reminds us that biblical courage is faithful action grounded in God’s presence, not fearlessness or self-reliance. You may still feel your heart race before a difficult conversation, a wise financial decision, or an honest admission that you need help. The command does not shame weakness; it redirects dependence. Because Christ has reconciled believers to God and promised to remain with His people, fear does not have to become the leader of our choices, even when it remains part of our experience.

Today, name one responsibility you have been avoiding because fear has been making the decision. Read Joshua 1:9 slowly, then ask, “What would obedience look like if I trusted that God is with me?” Take one clear step: send the necessary email, set a realistic budget, apologize without defending yourself, ask a trusted person for support, or turn off your notifications long enough to pray and think. Courage may feel quiet and ordinary. It can look like doing the next faithful thing while your emotions catch up. Do not measure God’s presence by your adrenaline level; look to Christ, remember His cross and resurrection, and move forward under His gracious rule.
