Love

In 1 Corinthians 12–14, Paul addresses a church divided by pride, status, and competition over spiritual gifts. Chapter 13 shows that even remarkable gifts accomplish nothing when they are exercised without love. This love is not merely warm emotion; it is a patient, kind, humble way of seeking another person’s good. It refuses to keep a record of wrongs or insist on personal advantage. Jesus perfectly embodies this love, and through His finished work He welcomes us before we have anything to prove. Because we are already loved in Christ, we can stop using people to establish our importance and begin serving them freely.

Our generation is constantly encouraged to promote itself, compare progress, and measure worth through attention, achievement, money, or influence. Work can become a contest, relationships can become transactions, and digital noise can train us to envy, react quickly, and remember every offence. Anxiety may make us protective of our time and resources, while disappointment tempts us to assume the worst about others. This passage offers a different way: love does not need to win every conversation or turn every kindness into future leverage. Secure in Christ, we can listen without planning a response, celebrate another person’s success, and give without secretly demanding recognition or repayment.

Today, choose one relationship in which you can practise love without an agenda. Pause before reacting, ask a sincere question, or offer practical help without announcing it to others. If comparison rises, thank God specifically for His grace in that person’s life. If you have been keeping an internal record of someone’s failures, bring the hurt honestly to God; forgiveness does not deny wisdom, truth, or healthy boundaries, but it releases personal revenge. Before sending a message, making a purchase, or entering a meeting, ask, “Am I seeking only my own way?” Then remember Christ’s patient love toward you and take one quiet step that serves another person’s genuine good.
