The Word for Today

Forgiveness

The Weight You Were Never Meant To Carry

Colossians 3:13 | WEB
Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

Today's Reflection

Paul writes to believers learning to live as one new people in Christ. In the surrounding verses, he tells them to “put on” compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love—the clothing of those whom God has chosen and made holy. Colossians 3:13 shows what these virtues look like when community becomes difficult: believers bear with ordinary weaknesses and release legitimate complaints rather than feeding resentment. The standard is not another person’s worthiness but Christ’s mercy. At the cross, Jesus fully dealt with our sin and freely forgave us; therefore, forgiveness is not denial of wrong, but a grace-shaped refusal to keep collecting the debt.

That command lands in a generation carrying workplace stress, financial pressure, anxious thoughts, strained relationships, and constant digital noise. Comparison can turn another person’s success into a private offense; hurried messages can deepen misunderstandings; old wounds can be replayed whenever a photo, post, or notification appears. Resentment may feel like protection, yet it keeps us emotionally tied to what hurt us and adds weight Christ never assigned us to carry. Forgiveness does not call evil good, erase wise boundaries, or instantly rebuild trust. It entrusts justice to God, refuses revenge, and opens our hearts to the freedom of living as people already forgiven in Christ.

Today, bring one specific grievance into the light before God. Name what happened without exaggerating or minimizing it, then thank Christ for the mercy you have received and ask for grace to release your claim to personal revenge. If contact is wise and safe, take a small step: pray for the person, stop rehearsing the accusation, offer a truthful apology for your part, or begin a calm conversation. Do not confuse forgiveness with immediate reconciliation; trust may need time, repentance, and healthy boundaries. When resentment returns, repeat the choice rather than condemning yourself. Forgiveness is often practiced more than once, but each surrender places the burden back into God’s just and merciful hands.

Today's Confession

I declare that because Christ has forgiven me, resentment will not rule my heart. I release my right to personal revenge and entrust every wrong to God’s perfect justice. I choose forgiveness without denying truth, abandoning wisdom, or ignoring healthy boundaries. By the Holy Spirit’s help, I will walk in mercy, patience, and freedom.

Today's Prayer

  1. 1Father, reveal any resentment I have been carrying. Help me bring it honestly into Your light.
  2. 2Jesus, remind me of the mercy I have received through Your finished work. Teach me to forgive as You forgave me.
  3. 3Holy Spirit, give me wisdom to pursue peace with truth and healthy boundaries. Guard my heart from bitterness.
  4. 4Lord, heal the wounds behind my anger. Help me entrust justice to You and walk forward in freedom.

Pause & Reflect

What grievance am I still carrying, and what would it look like to place that debt into God’s hands today?
