Day 264
The Word for Today
Speech
What You Keep Saying
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.”
World English Bible (WEB)
Today's Reflection
In Proverbs, wisdom is not abstract knowledge but skill for living faithfully before God. Proverbs 18 contrasts words that wound, divide, and destroy with speech that carries understanding and help. “Death and life” describes the real moral and relational consequences released by the tongue: words can crush a spirit, spread strife, or strengthen the weary. Those who “love it” are those who habitually indulge their speech, and they eventually receive its fruit. This is not a promise that words magically create reality. It is a sober reminder that God made speech consequential, and that our words should reflect his truth, mercy, and wisdom, perfectly revealed in Jesus.
Our generation speaks constantly—emails at work, texts in relationships, posts shaped by comparison, and comments swallowed by digital noise. Under anxiety, we may keep saying, “Everything will fail,” while money pressures tempt us to speak harshly or make fearful promises. Repeated words can deepen conflict, normalize contempt, and train our attention toward despair. Yet truthful, gracious speech can also name difficulty without surrendering to it, apologize without excuses, and encourage without pretending. Because Christ has secured our acceptance, we do not need to use words to prove our worth, control others, or curate an impressive image. We are free to speak honestly and gently, even when life feels uncertain.
Today, listen for the sentence you keep repeating about yourself, another person, or your future. Test it against God’s truth: Is it accurate, gracious, necessary, and timely? Before sending a message or answering under pressure, pause and ask Jesus to govern your tone. Replace exaggeration with clarity, gossip with silence, complaint with specific prayer, and criticism with words that help someone grow. If your speech has caused harm, acknowledge it plainly, seek forgiveness, and make amends where possible. Then choose one person to strengthen with sincere encouragement. The goal is not flawless speech achieved by willpower, but a tongue increasingly shaped by the gospel and surrendered to the Holy Spirit.
Today's Confession
“I declare that my tongue belongs to Jesus, who has redeemed me and speaks grace over my life. By the Spirit, I reject careless, fearful, and destructive speech. I will tell the truth in love, bless rather than belittle, and use my words to build others up. When I fail, I will repent quickly and receive Christ’s mercy as he reshapes my speech.”
Today's Prayer
- 1Lord Jesus, make my words truthful, gracious, and timely.
- 2Spirit of God, restrain me when silence is wiser than speaking.
- 3Father, help me repair harm caused by careless or harsh words.
- 4Use my speech today to strengthen the weary and honor Christ.
Pause & Reflect
What sentence have I been repeating, and what fruit is it producing in me and those around me?
